I have a soft spot for poetry. It has taken me a long time to get to that place of ‘poetry love’, but since then I have really enjoyed the world of poets. So I was obviously attracted to this book.
Michael Rosen is a prolific author with over 120 publications for children. In this book written for grades 4-6, he clearly explains what a poem is, what to do with it, and how to write your own. His writing style is enjoyable to read and you never feel like you are reading a text book. The best chapter is ‘What is a Poem?’ In this chapter, he goes into the multi facet layers of a poem and explains what they mean. It is fascinating and gives poems such a deeper meaning.
The author uses examples from well known poets such as Banjo Patterson and Alfred, Lord Tennyson, as well as his own. At the back, there is a chapter about technical points of poems. I highly recommend this book for ages over 10. I think they will enjoy it and learn so much. It is illustrated by Jill Calder.
This edition is paperback and 208 pages. It was published by Walker Books Ltd, Great Britain in 2017. ISBN: 9781844287635
